Hello parents, for those who don’t know me, my name is Shawn Campo and I am entering my first season as assistant coach for cross country. I am also currently the assistant coach for the track team here at Grizzell Middle School as well. Before the season starts in August, one important piece of gear your child should need is proper running shoes. It does not matter what level of experience a runner may have, it’s the shoes they use for running that helps them succeed. There are several well-known brands out there that provide running shoes for runners of all backgrounds. Each brand carries their own unique feature for their running shoes. For instance, Asics heavily focuses on gel-cushioning and Hoka One One focus on heel support. I truly believe that getting proper running shoes especially at the middle school age level would help these kids lower the chance of experiencing foot issues as they get older. I will provide a list of proper running shoes your child during the summer training and throughout the season. Apparel
Runners should check the weather before they come to practice come to practice! They should also step outside to see how it feels. Layers are a great way to make sure that you are staying warm and give you the option to cool off. Runners should think about wearing the following items based on the weather:
Runners are given a uniform during the third week of practice. The uniform includes a race top and race shorts. Spirit wear will be made available for purchase later this summer.
- Cotton/Dri-Fit Shirt/Long-sleeve
- Shorts
- Hooded Sweatshirt
- Sweatpants
- Tights (these come in handy later on in the season)
- Wrist watch
- Hat
- Sunglasses
- Comfortable Socks
